After testing several apps I found iCollections to be the closest replacement. Since DragThing is 32-bit and will not be updated to work under macOS Catalina, I started searching for alternatives. You need to spend a little time to customize it to your needs, but it's time well spent. Very pleased with the program and the developer responsiveness. If you need to replace DragThing, look no further.
This app has continually improved over the last few months. If you're looking for an attractive, functional adjunct to the Apple dock, this app is worth a serious look. Just procedural considerations for convenience, which is the whole idea of a program like this. The miniaturized bar needs to be smaller, and closed apps need to open with a single click and allow quitting from collection icon. A couple minor interface tweaks would be nice, and are hopefully in the works, but while helpful, they are certainly not deal breakers. There have been incremental improvements in the program, as well as bug fixes. More apps should have such an attentive developer. The developer has been very responsive with updates, email requests for features and support for customization.
So far I've been very pleased the functionality of the program.
